Importing A Car Into The U.S. From Canada?

Is Your Car Admissible?

Importing a car into the U.S. from Canada, you first need to determine if the car is admissible into the United States. Canada allows for vehicles that are 15 years or older to be imported from overseas, so the model you are looking at may not be made for the North American market.

The car you are looking at may be admissible into the U.S. if the car conforms to the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. The labels should be located on the engine or inside the driver's door frame. Your best practice is confirm this with the seller.

If the car does not conform to the DOT and EPA standards, you will need to contact a Registered Importer (RI) to assist with the import of this vehicle. A RI will do the necessary modifications to the vehicle to get it to conforming status. You might want to verify the cost of working with an Register Importer prior to finalizing the purchase.
