FAQ: Carrier Assistance

What Is A Carrier Code?
expand arrow
A carrier code is a unique 4-digit alphanumeric code issued by the CBSA to identify a carrier.

There are two main types of codes:
  • Non-bonded carrier code – Carriers in possession of a non-bonded code must have freight coming into Canada released at the border (first port of arrival).
  • Bonded carrier code – Bonded carriers have posted security which allows them to transport shipments (not cleared at the first point of arrival) inland to a bonded warehouse of their choice.

What Is A Bonded Carrier?

A bonded carrier can bring a load of goods across the Canadian port of entry to an authorized location without customs release. They can do this because upon application to become a bonded carrier they were required to post financial security of $5,000 to $25,000 with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

What Is An ACI eManifest?

An ACI eManifest is a cargo and conveyance declaration transmitted to the CBSA by the carrier. The Advance Commercial Information (ACI) program provides Canada Border Services Agency officers with electronic pre-arrival cargo and conveyance information so that they are equipped with the right information to identify health, safety and security threats related to commercial goods before the goods arrive in Canada. ACI eManifest requires highway carriers to transmit their cargo and conveyance data to CBSA for Canada-bound crossings, no less than one hour prior to arrival at the border.

What Is An ACE eManifest?

An ACE eManifest is a cargo and conveyance declaration transmitted to the CBP by the carrier. The Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) is the trade processing system through which US Customs and Border Protection and its partnering government agencies are implementing the Single Window Initiative for processing imports and exports. Through ACE as the Single Window, manual processes will be streamlined and automated, paper will be eliminated, and the international trade community will be able to more easily and efficiently comply with US laws and regulations.
