Administrative Monetary Penalties Webinar

February 3, 2020

Following the coming into force of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) on January 15, 2019, the Agriculture and Agri-Food Administrative Monetary Penalties Regulations (AAAMPR) were amended and published in the Canada Gazette Part II on May 1, 2019.

The amendments expand Administrative Monetary Penalties (AMPs) as an enforcement response option for all food commodities. They allowed the CFIA to continue issuing AMPs for non-compliance in the meat sector, which were introduced in 2015.

AMPs are an enforcement action that the CFIA may take when a regulated party does not meet certain regulatory requirements. AMPs can be issued as a notice of violation with only a warning or with a monetary penalty. This is determined by taking into account potential or actual harm, the intent and compliance history of the regulated party.
