New Restrictions On The Importation Of Dogs

Recently, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced they are implementing new restrictions on the importation of Dogs from countries that are high-risk for dog rabies.

This is a courtesy notice to inform you that as of September 28, 2022 importation of dogs from areas at risk for rabies will no longer be allowed entry into Canada.

Following is a recap of the new restrictions:

Affected Commodities: Dogs imported for commercial purposes 

“Commercial purposes” includes but is not limited to: dogs for resale, adoption, fostering or gifting, dogs for breeding or sale of offspring, showing/exhibition and any other purpose that is not a personal pet in the owners (the importers) home.

Affected Areas: Countries at high-risk of having dog rabies

If you hold a CFIA issued import permit to import dogs:

  • Issued prior to June 28, 2022: It will remain valid until its expiration date
  • Issued on or after June 28, 2022:  It will expired on September 27, 2022
  • After Sept 28, 2022 import permits will no longer be issued
